January, In store Demo

Paper Sculpture demonstration on Thursday January 29th starting at 2pm.

img_0293.jpg

This is a must see for any paper enthusiast and Pop Folk fans. Sean Beesley, a Seattle artist, has been a painting for over 20 years. He combines paper and acrylic to create extravagant Pop Folk sculptures of football players, monsters, robots, custom boxes, and low relief paintings on canvas.

Here is what he had to say about his latest commissioned work, a giant Man o’ Warship mobile.

“I was Commissioned to do a mobile made from paper of an 18th Century Man o’ Warship.
I finished the piece but had no where to store it until delivery. Denis Fitzpatrick (my boss a Utrecht) was kind enough to let me hang it from the ceiling at work. During the transport to the store a gust of wind sprang the butts of the masts. So during my days off I came into work to fix the ship.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, I will be at the demo desk working on the ship. It is made from 3ply Bristol board and acrylic gel as the glue, and chopsticks for the spars. It has 20 guns, 4 cannonades and 2 Stern chasers.”

Come in on Thursday January 29th at 2pm, get great advice and talk to Shawn about his work and the techniques he uses to create these great sculptures.

Color enthusiasts

Lately, I have been in search of great color information, matching, schemes, theory’s.  Two names that kept coming up was Johannes Itten and Hans Hoffman. Both did great research and have books.

Itten’s book is a little science mixed with the psychology of color.  I am reading the book right now “ http://books.google.com/books?id=ofvRhNBgoCoC. It’s slow reading for me because, if it ain’t an Ironman comic or a book by Jim Woodring, I have trouble concentrating. I keep thinking to myself  “You could be painting instead of  reading.”.

6 years ago I read Hoffamn’s book but I forgot a lot of it, so I have to read it again http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Hofmann. If I remember correctly, Hoffman’s book is more scientific then Ittens.

The reason I bring this up is to tell you about a super cool color site: http://www.colourlovers.com/ . Here you will find a community of designers and people who love color. They have a palette widget so you can create pallets and share them with the community, get their opinions and stuff.  Who knows you might even meet some one you like… aaaheem!

So, I will get back with you about color info as I read more on the subject.

Now go and create!    De Leva

Hello 2009!

newyearscard1.jpg
Best wishes to you and yours for 2009!
Yes, we did have a lot of snow and while the City of Seattle shut down for 2 weeks, Seattle Utrecht stayed busy selling “Snowman Brushes” and “Icicle color” paints to the artists of Seattle.
Pike street became a car slide and sled hill for about 3 days. One day, Dennis Fitzpatrick, our fearless leader, took the over crowed bus into work. During the day the streets froze and it snowed 1ft. By the end of the day no buses were going anywhere. So Dennis decided to walk 4 miles up hill and bare foot home. Well not really bare foot, but it is quite hilly on your way to Ballard. Can you say BBuuuRR!?!

Now if you didn’t get the colors and brushes you wanted for gifts COME ON IN! We’ve got what you are looking for.
OH YEAH! 50% OFF, All Lascaux Acrylic paints, Chinese calligraphy sets, and more!
Just come on in and look for the Red Dots!

You may even want to bring some shoes by for Denis.
